Red’s Pawn Shop is:

Meet our team!

“Red”
The namesake of Red’s Pawn Shop is Keith “Red” Kaser. Born in Plymouth, Indiana, in 1923, Red had been in business in the Michiana area for most of his life. Former businesses included automotive sales and service, school bus contractor, ice cream route distributor, bar owner, firearms dealer, and, of course, pawnbroker. Of the many professions he experienced throughout his life, pawnbroking was the one he loved the most and felt he was born to do.

Following his death in 1995, Red’s ashes were placed in an hourglass-shaped urn which has been kept at the South Bend store location ever since. Customers still drop by to see the hourglass and to request that we ”flip it over and put Red to work.”

Red may be gone, but he will never be forgotten, especially his fair-minded, honest, and kindhearted dealing with every customer who walked through the doors at his namesake, Red’s Pawn Shop!

Steve Krupnik, one of the owners of Red’s Pawn Shop, established the business in 1977 in conjunction with the gentleman who inspired the name of the business --- Keith “Red” Kaser. First acquainted in the in the automotive and real estate business, the two realized there was good business to be done with good people to whom mainstream means of credit was not available. Schooled in Business Management, Accounting, Gemology and Appraisal, Steve has always sought to learn more to better serve his customers, employees and community.

A lifelong resident of South Bend, Steve is an active participant in the community and takes great joy in lending a helping hand in many ways. But his involvement doesn’t stop at the local level. Steve is deeply involved with the pawnbroking industry, serving on the Board of Directors of both the National and the Indiana Pawnbrokers Associations for a number of years.

Part of the art of being a pawnbroker is having a sixth sense about how much things are worth both new and used. As an experienced pawnbroker, Steve gets most of his information about prices by walking around stores and looking at catalogs, and also by talking with other pawnbrokers. The real experience comes from buying and selling things every day. He's been in the business for over 27 years.

But it’s not all work for Steve! When not running the business, his favorite place is at the side of his bride, Velma, and daughter Amanda. He’s a gourmet chef and also enjoys the sports of boxing and auto racing. There are no strangers to Steve…he just doesn’t know your name yet! Give a call or drop him an e-mail at Steve@RedsPawn.com . He’s always happy to help in any way!

Joe Combes is a “lifer” here at Red’s, having joined the team in 1988, immediately after graduating from high school. Joe has a well developed ability to listen --- and understand --- what people are trying to say, and has another gift as well --- his ability to make them feel comfortable whether it’s their first or fiftieth visit to Red’s. A familiar face with a “glad-to-see-you” grin, Joe’s always ready to help!

Hello, I am Tyrone Miller, the newest member of the Red's Pawn Shop family, and I am now the manager of the Mishawaka location. Red's has been a part of my life for many years and I am very excited to join the team. I've been working in retail since the mid 1970's and have worn many, many hats, including but not limited to, Store Manager for Cook's Department Store and Regional Fur Manager for Hudson's Department Stores. Later on in the 1980's, I changed gears and for the next 14 years, I worked in the automotive industry for one of the areas largest dealerships. All the while, I had a fascination for dabbling in computers as a hobby in my spare time. As the home computer industry began to skyrocket in the mid 1990's, I saw an opportunity to 'carpe diem', as the saying goes. I opened my own computer business in 1996, Million's Used Computers, and had a very successful run for the next 10 years. Maybe you've seen me there? We were first located at the corner of Jefferson & Logan in Mishawaka, and then later moved to Town & Country Shopping Center. After closing the store this past summer, my good friend Steve Krupnik suggested to me that I should become part of his team and head up the Mishawaka location of Red’s. How could I say no?

I'd like to invite all my friends and past customers, old and new, to the Mishawaka store and give them that special 'Tyrone Treatment' that I'm known for. Excellent customer service and your satisfaction is my #1 priority.

Jeff Jones is one of the “newer” members of the team at Red’s Pawn Shop, having joined the staff in 2001. Schooled at Valparaiso Technical Institute, Jeff has a wealth of practical knowledge gained through years of experience in the music field. His several areas of expertise include playing, repair and construction of musical instruments, and he has a strong background in electronics service and repair. One of Jeff’s greatest strengths is his ability to listen to customers, to glean exactly what application they have in mind for their instrument, then guiding them to an instrument that not only meets their needs but their budgets as well. For quality band, stringed or wind instruments at a fraction of the cost of new … or for a fine line of brand new instruments selected for their great price and quality, stop in to chat or e-mail Jeff at Jeff@RedsPawn.com . He’s always “in tune” with customers at Red’s Pawn Shop!

If it’s got strings, you can pretty well bet Jim Wilcox can play it! Though he claims the guitar and bass as his instruments of choice, when you stop by the Mishawaka store, you’ll likely see him strumming a mandolin or plucking a banjo. And this broad knowledge base surely isn’t wasted as he passes the days at Red’s! Many a young musician has heard his intricate trills up and down the frets and developed his own yearning to play, and Jim’s been right there, ready to lend a hand in instrument selection and course direction. When asked what he likes most about working at Red’s, Jim’s answer is quick: “We have great people and everyone gets a fair deal!” Now that would be music to Red’s ears!

For more than 22 years, Paul Mester has been an active part of Reds Pawn Shop, specializing in tools and equipment, while also being well versed in jewelry, musical instruments and a wide array of products. He and Steve Krupnik met years ago on the racetrack, and they've been racing around making things happen ever since! One of Paul's favorite parts of the business is making people feel more comfortable about what can sometimes be the uncomfortable situation of finding themselves short of cash between paychecks. It's just the way he --- and the entire staff! --- likes to do things at Reds Pawn Shop!

Here’s what our customers say about our staff …
  • "You folks always offer more than the other shops!"
  • "I'd never take my stuff anywhere but Red’s.  You are the best!"
